Creepy Crabs

Cause-Pubic lice, or crabs, are a parasite. This means they are a living STI. They are usually spread through sexual contact and are most common in adults. Pubic lice found on children may be a sign of sexual exposure or abuse. Occasionally, pubic lice can spread by close personal contact or contact with articles such as clothing, bed linens, or towels that have been used by an infested person. A person may also get pubic lice from a toilet seat since they can jump up to six inches.
Symptoms-Pubic lice can cause itching in the genital area. An infected person may also experience visible nits (lice eggs) or crawling lice.

Incubation-An infected person may start feeling/seeing symptoms soon after they become infected.

Untreated-Pubic lice do not transmit disease; however, a secondary bacterial infection or swollen lymph glands can occur from scratching of the skin. If the infestation involves the eyelashes, and left untreated, the eyelids can become swollen and inflamed. With the majority of infestations, after the pubic lice have fed, a grey-blue colored spot appears at the feeding site, which may last for days.

Effects on Baby-No serious effects or complications, to the baby or mother, have ever been reported. However, a pregnant or breast feeding woman should see their doctor if they have pubic lice to discuss their treatment. Some treatments can potentially harm the fetus, and should be avoided. Some treatments should be avoided if breastfeeding.

Treatment-To treat pubic lice, an over-the-counter lotion or mousse can be used. Lindane shampoo can also be used, but it is not recommended as a first treatment plan because it can harm some parts of the body, such as the nervous system.

Prevention-The best way to prevent pubic lice is to be sexually abstinent and to be extra careful around an infected person and in public places. Do not share clothing, bedding, and towels used by an infested person.
